Video Conferencing
Flights
What is Videoconferencing?
Videoconferencing is the live connection of two or more people using a combination of video, audio and data for the purpose
of meetings. During a videoconference, parties at each site in the meeting can speak to each other and see each other in
real time. Data presentations can also be used during such meetings.
What can it be used for?
There are wide varieties of applications for video conferencing. The most common uses include:
Replacing existing meetings where travel is required, with more regular meetings via videoconference
Training via videoconference
Presentation of concepts/ideas
Interviews
Collaborative development of documents over distance
Why Videoconferencing?
Videoconferencing reduces the cost of travelling to meetings, increases the regularity at which meetings can occur, and
reduces the amount of time spent travelling between offices. For example for one person to fly from Melbourne to Perth it would cost approximately
$1,210.
To have the meeting via video the cost of the meeting would be $98. This is just the cost of
travelling for one person what if in that meeting you needed to have 4 people attend?
Imagine the cost then!!!
With the implementation of video conferencing in-person visits were infrequent and required scheduling a long time in
advance, video meetings can bring sites together in a matter of minutes for high quality face-to-face communications
Video conferencing is not only used as a replacement for travel and to save time it also has benefits and value adds
over more conventional communication devices such as a email, fax and the telephone. With the use of video
conferencing you are able to see the response from remote staff instantaneously therefore knowing whether they got an
understanding of the situation. This leads to a better understanding the issues at hand.
What is Multipoint Conferencing?
A multipoint videoconference is a videoconference involving more than two sites.
There are two modes, or formats, for multipoint videoconferences.
Continuous Presence (CP)
Voice Activated (VA)
ISDN Cost?
The cost of a videoconference call over ISDN is determined by:
a) The duration of the call
b) The quality of the call (i.e. 128K , 256K, 384K or 512K )
c) Distance between calling parties
Users should select a call quality that is appropriate for the type of meeting being held. Higher call qualities will allow for
higher quality audio and video for larger groups of staff in the meeting.
